A Behind-the-Scenes Look at SMP LeBlanc’s HVAC Work at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde

When you step into a historic building like Montreal’s Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM), chances are you’re captivated by the grandeur, the history, or the anticipation of the performance.

But have you ever stopped to think about what’s working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the space feels just right – neither too hot nor too cold, with air that’s fresh and easy to breathe?

For most, this isn’t top of mind. But for us, it’s the first thing we notice – and for good reason.

It’s just one of those things you can’t look past once you get knowledge of it since we’ve been in this industry for a mighty long time (40+ years).

Recently, we had the privilege of contributing to the modernization of TNM, focusing exclusively on the newly constructed sections. Our role was to perform air balancing and duct leak testing to ensure these spaces met the high standards expected of a facility like TNM.

Let’s get into the type of HVAC work we did for them.

Air Balancing at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM)

Air balancing is one of the most critical steps in fine-tuning an HVAC system. For the new spaces at TNM, the process started with an evaluation of the HVAC design and a review of the project’s airflow requirements.

From there, our technicians performed a series of measurements to verify the actual airflow at each diffuser and return grille. Using calibrated instruments, we measured airflow rates throughout the main ducts and their branches, carefully documenting each reading against the specified airflow rates.

The adjustment phase required methodical attention to detail as we worked with the system’s dampers to achieve the specified airflow rates. Each adjustment was followed by new measurements to verify the impact on overall system performance. This process continued until we achieved the specified airflow rates throughout the new building.

Proper air balancing directly impacts system efficiency. When airflow isn’t balanced correctly, the HVAC equipment has to work harder to maintain temperatures. Our precise adjustments to the new system help reduce energy consumption while ensuring consistent performance throughout the building.

Duct Leak Testing at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM)

Before completing the air balancing, we conducted duct leak testing on all new installations. This critical process began with a visual inspection of the new ductwork to verify proper installation.

Following industry standards, we conducted pressure tests on the new ductwork to verify system integrity. This involved carefully measuring pressure levels and documenting results. The data collected during these tests provided concrete verification that the new duct system met the specified performance requirements.

Throughout both processes, our team maintained detailed documentation of all measurements and adjustments. This documentation serves as a baseline for future maintenance and verification of system performance.

Transforming Quebec’s HVAC Infrastructure, One Building at a Time

In the end, working on the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde was an exciting journey that allowed us to put our best foot forward and highlight the expertise of our team.

Our HVAC technicians, equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and testing equipment, approached each challenge methodically. We believe in taking the time to get things right – our thorough approach ensures that every project, whether it’s a landmark like TNM or a regular commercial building, meets our exacting standards while respecting project timelines.

If you need professional HVAC solutions for your building or want to learn more about what goes into keeping complex systems running smoothly, don’t hesitate to contact us. Stay tuned – our next behind-the-scenes project will showcase even more of the critical work we’re doing to keep Quebec’s landmarks and modern spaces comfortable and efficient.
